You had to figure P!nk would be a pretty cool Mom. It sounds like her daughter’s got the same kind of attitude. She might have to set some rules after this one, though…

Did you ever have to set some ground rules with your kids about bad words?

How to Talk to Your Kids About Yesterday’s Shooting

Yesterday was a sad day for everyone in Canada.  If you’re anything like me chances are you couldn’t escape the coverage and spent at least a portion of the day watching it on TV, or reading about it on the internet.

I’m in my 30′s and can barely fathom how or why someone could possibly kill a young soldier,  and I can’t even begin to imagine how difficult it must be to explain the situation to a child.  My son is only 6 1/2 months, so I’m pretty sure yesterday didn’t even register on his radar, but for those of you with older kids, The Huffington Post has published a bunch of great tips on how to talk to your kids about yesterday’s shootings and other horrific events.

Some of my favourites were:

  • Talk to your children. Do not brush this under the rug. This will be a source of discussion at school and other events. Children of all ages will be discussing this tragedy.

  • Provide age appropriate information. The types of discussions you have with your child will depend upon their age and what they have heard already.

  • Let your children ask questions. You do not have to have an answer to every question, but just letting them ask is healthy and moves emotions forward.

If you click HERE The Huffington Post has 12 move wonderful tips how to talk to your kids and help them understand.

Some more great words of advice comes from Mr. Rogers…well actually Mr. Rogers mother.  In this video he recounts what his mother told him whenever there was bad news on the television.

I don’t know about you, but I was a pretty gullible kid!

When I was a kid I believed that you could take as much money as you wanted from an ATM, it didn’t matter what you had in your bank account!

I also had a friend who thought that she had to eat an even number of carrots to make sure that her eye sight wasn’t lopsided!

What is a ridiculous thing you believed when you were younger?

Road Safety Reminders

icbc ped safety for back to school

It is absolutely the driver’s responsibility to be on the look-out for all Pedestrians, especially the kids. That being said, back to school is a great time to review safe pedestrian practices with the kids. If we were to be honest…how many of us need to review the safety rules too? Don’t forget…school speed zones of 30k will be back in effect Tuesday at 7:30am. Those speed zones run school days between 7:30 and 5.

More technology in the classroom may be hindering rather than helping: research

(Submitted by Simon Druker) It’s no secret that technology is playing a bigger and bigger role in the classroom these days, but new research suggests it might not be such a great thing.

“Students who use computers most frequently in schools typically did worse than those who used them a bit more moderately. Adding 21st century technology to 20th century teachings isn’t going to leverage the kind of improvements that we’re hoping for,” says Andreas Schleicher, director for education skills at the Paris-basedOrganisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

He says that’s not unique to a single country. “Quite surprisingly, most of the countries with the strongest learning outcomes have actually been quite cautious when introducing technology.”

“And when they do, they sort of focus on teachers — connecting teachers, building platforms for teacher collaboration — and being quite moderate in student use of computers.”

Research from the OECD shows more technology actually equals lower grades.  High-achieving school systems such those in South Korea and Shanghai have lower levels of computer use in school.

“There is no single country in which the Internet is used frequently at school by a majority of students and where students’ performance improved,” says Schleicher.

“The more technology-intensive classroom environments, the students there seem to be coming out lower on their tests. And it’s not just on traditional learning outcomes like math, science, and reading — but also on digital skills. That is really surprising.”

He says how the technology is adapted to current lessons and curriculums is the problem, not the computers and tablets themselves.

“There’s certainly a lot to say for improved software. But we need to think a lot harder about how we leverage technology. Making teachers not just part of those strategies, but a part of their design,” says Schleicher.

Australia, Denmark and Greece were the top three countries, in terms of the amount of classroom minutes students spend on the on the Internet.

A restaurant has taken a stand against kids!

restaurant

A popular restaurant in Rome, La Fraschetta del Pesce, has taken a stand against kids, and banned any under 5!

And as you can imagine, there are MANY parents not happy about this!

The restaurant has even put up a sign on their door, with big ‘NO’ signs over a stroller, crying baby and car seat.

The sign says “Due to some unpleasant incidents caused by a lack of manners, children under 5 are not allowed in this restaurant.”

There are going to be VERY differing opinions on this, I think it all depends on the restaurant. There are definitely restaurants suitable to have young children in, and there are some that certainly are not.

What do you think?!
